How the pairing score works

Each heading + body font combination receives a compatibility score from 0–100 based on four typography metrics:

X-height similarity (30%) — fonts with similar x-heights feel related and create visual cohesion across a page.
Stroke contrast difference (25%) — pairing a high-contrast serif with a low-contrast sans creates hierarchy. Too similar = bland; too different = chaotic.
Stroke type difference (20%) — mixing stroke categories (serif + sans, display + serif) creates the contrast that makes headings read as headings.
Character width (15%) — complementary widths prevent monotony while maintaining rhythm.
Letter openness (10%) — open letterforms improve body text readability; slightly closed forms work for impactful headings.

A score of 75+ is excellent. 60–74 is a solid, professional pairing. Below 60 is usable but niche.
